Garhwal, in the west, has the four Char Dham shrines along with Rishikesh, Haridwar, Mussoorie, Auli, Chopta and the Valley of Flowers. Most first trips focus on one region, as crossing between them takes a full day.
Rishikesh, Haridwar, Mussoorie, Nainital and Corbett stay open through winter, and Auli gets its ski season from January to March. The Char Dham shrines close from around November to April, when their deities move to winter seats such as Ukhimath for Kedarnath. For mountain views, March to June and October to November bring mild days and open views, while landslides disrupt mountain roads through the July to September monsoon.
Akshaya Tritiya, in April or May, opens Gangotri and Yamunotri. Kedarnath's opening date is announced on Maha Shivratri and Badrinath's on Basant Panchami, and both usually open in late April or May. The shrines close for winter around Diwali, with Kedarnath shutting on Bhai Dooj and Badrinath closing in November.
Kathgodam, about 35 km below Nainital, is the railhead for Kumaon, and Pantnagar Airport serves the same region. For Garhwal, the main stations are Haridwar, Dehradun and Rishikesh, and Jolly Grant Airport near Dehradun is about 20 km from Rishikesh. Nainital is roughly 300 km from Delhi by road.
Every pilgrim must register with the Uttarakhand government's yatra registration system, either online or at counters in Haridwar and Rishikesh, using a photo ID, and carry the registration letter for checks along the route. The same rule applies to Hemkund Sahib. A full Char Dham Yatra by road traditionally runs from Yamunotri to Gangotri, Kedarnath and Badrinath, and takes about 10 to 12 days.
The trek from Gaurikund to Kedarnath is about 16 km. Ponies, palanquins (dolis) and porters who carry passengers in baskets are all available along the trail. Helicopter shuttles fly from Phata, Sersi and Guptkashi, with tickets sold only through the official IRCTC HeliYatra platform. The temple stands at about 3,583 metres, below the Kedarnath peak.
On the popular 16 km run from Shivpuri to Rishikesh, rafters tackle rapids called Roller Coaster, Golf Course, Club House and Return to Sender. Longer stretches starting at Marine Drive and Kaudiyala add bigger rapids for experienced rafters. Rafting runs from around September to June and takes a break through the July and August monsoon.
Dhikala, where forest rest houses overlook the Ramganga reservoir and its grasslands, open from mid-November to mid-June. Established in 1936, Corbett was India's first national park and was later renamed after the hunter-turned-conservationist Jim Corbett. The Jhirna zone stays open for day safaris all year.
Hemkund Sahib, a gurudwara beside a glacial lake at about 4,600 metres. Both the shrine and the Valley of Flowers are reached from Ghangaria, a trekking base above Govindghat. The Valley of Flowers, a UNESCO World Heritage Site with Nanda Devi National Park, opens from June to October, with the most flowers in July and August.
For pilgrims short on time or stamina, a helicopter yatra flies between the four shrines from Dehradun in about five to six days, instead of the 10 to 12 days needed by road.
