Varanasi, for its ghats and temples on the Ganga, and Lucknow, the city of the Nawabs, come right after Agra. Ayodhya and Prayagraj draw large numbers of pilgrims, and Mathura and Vrindavan, the Braj towns linked to Lord Krishna, are busiest around Holi and Janmashtami. Sarnath, just outside Varanasi, and Fatehpur Sikri, near Agra, are the main heritage side trips.

A string of more than 80 ghats, from Assi in the south past Tulsi, Kedar and Dashashwamedh to Manikarnika, the main cremation ghat, where photography is considered disrespectful. Pilgrims bathe, priests chant and the old city's temples catch the first light. In the evening, a row of young priests performs the Ganga Aarti at Dashashwamedh in perfect unison.

Deepotsav, when lakhs of earthen lamps line Ram ki Paidi along the Saryu River, with lamp counts that have set world records in recent years. The Ram Mandir, consecrated in January 2024, is the city's centrepiece. Hanuman Garhi and the riverside evening aarti on the Saryu are the other key sights.

Barsana, near Mathura, celebrates Lathmar Holi a few days before the main festival, when women playfully strike men from neighbouring Nandgaon with long sticks while the men shield themselves. Vrindavan's Banke Bihari Temple holds a Holi of flower petals. Crowds in the Braj towns are dense at this time, so travel light.
